Anthropic’s top engineer Boris Cherny has said that the position of software engineer will soon be eliminated.
The advent of Artificial Intelligence has had the biggest impact in the field of coding. Companies are now getting their work done with AI. Anthropic is the biggest example of this. According to a report, Anthropic’s top engineer Boris Cherny has said that the post of software engineer will soon be eliminated. He told that no one writes code by hand at Anthropic anymore. The company’s engineers, product team and even he himself does not write code by hand. Cherney does not tell what will happen in the future, but he is talking about the change whose effect has started to be seen.
The entire work of software engineers is in the hands of AI
According to TOI Tech report, the entire work of software engineers has come into the hands of AI. Talking about Anthropic itself, the company’s AI models talk to each other on Slack without the help of software engineers and fix technical problems that different teams face. The use of AI has increased significantly in Anthropic’s work. The situation is such that today writing code manually in Anthropic has stopped.
Other tech giants on the path to Anthropic
Everyone is hurrying to adopt the path that Anthropic has shown the world. From Google to Meta and Amazon are working to follow in this footsteps. According to the report, 75 percent of the new code in Meta is now generated by AI. This figure was 25 percent in the year 2024.
Meta’s engineers are getting 75% of their total code prepared with AI.
Even in Snapchat, 65% of the code is being written with the help of AI.
Which software engineers will be harmed?
A question arises that which software engineers will suffer the most due to AI. According to the report, Cherney believes that Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) like VS Code, Xcode, Vim are going to end rapidly. Engineers who have been writing code on these for decades will suffer greater losses. He predicted that people will not use IDEs by the end of this year.
Whose needs will remain?
So will the need for all software engineers disappear? Cherney believes that software engineers will be replaced by ‘builders’. An expert who can get the work done through AI and think about different topics instead of writing line by line of code.
