THE national men’s football team has made history by entering the playoffs for the first time in the World Cup.
Bafana Bafana beat Korea Republic 1-0 at Monterrey Stadium, in the city of Guadalupe, Mexico, on Thursday morning.
The winning goal for Hugo Broos’ team was blocked by Thapelo Maseko in the second half.
The local team needed to win this game to advance after being beaten 2-0 by Mexico in the opening game, and drawing 1-1 with Czechia in the second.
Collecting three points in the last game ensured they finished second in Group A with four points.
In this group, Mexico topped the list, beating Czechia 3-0 in its last game, with nine points.
Korea finished in third place with three points, which means they will have to wait until the group stage to see if they will be among the eight countries that will advance to the third place.
Czechia, which finished last with one point, has joined the countries that have washed their jerseys in the tournament held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Bafana will face one of the host countries, Canada, in the Last 32 on Sunday at 9pm.
