KAIZER Chiefs avoided making the worst record in history by regaining their dignity by beating Durban City in the Betway Premiership match on Sunday afternoon, at FNB Stadium, Nasrec.

It was the bravery of Glody Lilepo who made the Chiefs look good with the goal he scored in the second half.

If the Chiefs had been beaten it would have been the fifth time in a row in all competitions which would have been a new and bad record for the Kings since this had never happened in history..

After the match, the Chiefs coach, Cedric Kaze, said: “We controlled the game from the first minute, it was the last five minutes when we got ourselves into trouble by sitting behind but with three points we deserved. This will give everyone confidence and enthusiasm to work and play well in the next match. People should know that every match faces difficult situations. We were also disappointed but we hope that from the way we played, we will look forward.”

The Chiefs started the game with seven changes compared to the previous game in which they were beaten by Richards Bay FC. It came to them and the curiosity to change the bad results in previous games in various competitions.

Card penalties and injuries to other players gave Zitha Kwinika, Inacio Miguel, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Lilepo, Asley du Preez, Wandile Duba and Mduduzi Shabalala the opportunity to start the game.

These players replaced Aden McCarthy, Sibongiseni Mthathwa, Nkanyiso Shinga, Gaston Sirino, Flavio Da Silava, Asanele Velebayi and Ethan Chislett.

The Chiefs, who showed signs of coldness in the first half, came back in the second by removing Du Preez and replacing Velebayi who came in with promising moves.

The goal that put the Chiefs in the lead came through Lilepo’s foot in the 69th minute following a good move by Mfundo Vilakazi who had just entered.

City repeatedly entered the Chiefs box in the last minutes and in the time added on by the referee, but in the end they failed to score an equalizing goal.

This win brings the Chiefs back to the line to finish the season with the top teams on the log since they have two games left of the teams above them.
