OFFICER of the Ministry of Home Affairs KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Cyril Mncwabe, we have appealed to those who issued IDs and ended up not collecting them, to collect them as they are in their offices. Mncwabe said there were 100,000 identity cards that had not been collected from different offices in the province.

Uthey spoke to the school principals, as well as different agencies to raise the alarm that the IDs of those who have lost their lives should be collected.

“From December 2025, there are 105,878 identity cards that have not been collected from our offices. We have different campaigns, including going on the radio, to persuade people to collect identity cards,” he said recently while speaking at a parliamentary committee.

In this meeting, it was revealed that those aged 15 to 35, are the majority of those who have not downloaded their identity cards.

“It’s free for those who are starting to issue ID cards and don’t pay at all. There are old green ID cards that have not been collected from other offices. We no longer issue old ID cards but there are some that have not been collected from our offices.”

Mncwabe also revealed that they are on a campaign to visit schools so that students who are of voting age, have the opportunity to have their IDs checked.

“There are trucks that go to schools to collect ID cards for students. We are working with the Municipality of Thekwini, where schools with students who need ID cards are identified. Some students are brought to Mngeni offices, as there are volunteers who go to the community to identify students who need ID cards,” he said.

He also revealed that there are banks that people can go to to get their IDs, which is FNB Bank at the C shopping mall.ornubia, Nedbank in Durban North as well as Standard Bank at the Kingsmead branch in Durban.

It just so happens that the Electoral Commission will open an opportunity on the weekend of June 20 and 21, 2026, for people to register to vote in the elections.

Although the date of the election has not yet been announced, it is expected to be between November and January next year.

The commission revealed that more than 200,000 people registered to vote from March last year to March this year.

Of these, 132,092 registered using the technical system, while 128,113 registered at the commission’s offices. Young people have the highest number of subscribers at this time.
