A Free State police officer and three other people died following today’s incident.
The 47-year-old police officer, who was working in Hennenman as a Rural Safety Coordinator, said that he had just entered work and went out to search for his girlfriend on Saturday afternoon. After not finding it in one place, he went with the girlfriend’s uncle to another, where Abe’s family members attended the ceremony.
Police said a dispute broke out after it was reported that the woman was missing. The policeman is said to have opened fire and killed the girl’s mother, her uncle and a 25-year-old woman. Two other people were injured, one was taken to hospital and the other was treated at the scene.
The officer then returned to his car and shot himself. Cases of murder, attempted murder will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
