MORE than 3,400 traffic police officers will be deployed in different parts of the province during the Easter holidays.

This was revealed by the Minister of Transport in KwaZulu-Natal, Mr. Siboniso Duma yesterday, when he officially launched the Department’s campaigns to ensure security during the Easter holidays.

Duma said this at a press conference on Dumisani Makhaye road, KwaMashu, where there was a big roadblock, where the campaigns were opened.

Before that, Duma visited the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) center in Mdloti, KwaDukuza.

Speaking to the media, Duma said that more than 3,483 traffic police in this province will be deployed, and he said that there will be more than 105 from the national level.

He said they had set themselves a 10% reduction in fatal road accidents over the Easter long weekend.

“At Easter last year, we recorded a 38% decrease in the number of people who died in road accidents, compared to 43% in 2024. We deployed more than 3,483 provincial police and more than 105 who were properly arrested by Nenzani La Ezweni’s campaign,” said Duma.

He said the police will work 24 hours seven days a week until May 3, this year.

“We will have 148 roadblocks that will be looking for different things. 80 will deal with drunk drivers,” said Duma.

He said that there will be 118 places where policemen will be deployed to monitor the speed of vehicles in areas that are considered to be prone to accidents as well as in those areas where tourists and worshipers usually flock.

He went on to say that cars that do not deserve to be on the road, will be removed from the road. He said that they will not only deal with the drivers of the cars but they will also go to their owners.

Those who drink tap water and crowd the streets, he said, will be mourned for Sigonyela’s bracelets.

In yesterday’s campaign, which started at 7 in the morning, when it hit 9 in the morning, 17 buses and taxis were inspected.

At the same time, there were four public transports that were blocked.
