FORMER coach of Kaizer Chiefs, Stuart Baxter, has suggested local legend Benni McCarthy as one of the best candidates to coach the team.

At the moment Makhosi is managed by Cedric Kaze and Khali Ben Youssef, following the departure of Nasreddine Nabi in October last year.

Baxter, who coached the Chiefs from 2012 to 2015, and returned from 2021 to 2022, sees McCarthy as being able to withstand the pressure of coaching this big team.

Amakhosi have failed to hold the ball this season and have fallen behind in the race for the Betway Premiership league title.

This team lost four games in a row in different competitions but eased the situation by beating Durban City 1-0 at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

“You have to ask yourself if these coaches who are currently in charge are the ones who are doing the work or are they working with their hands tied behind their backs? I don’t have an answer to that because I don’t know under what conditions they are working,” said Baxter in an interview with the FarPost website.

“If these coaches are fired, the fans will see that the team is doing something. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter which coach the team hires if they can’t ensure that he is working in a situation where he will be able to do his job in the right way. The team should know what that coach intends to do with the team.

“I believe that there are coaches who cannot withstand this pressure. You can get a coach like Benni McCarthy but you have to allow him to be the coach he is, trust him.

“That’s what Bobby (Motaung) and chairman Kaizer Motaung did for me. They supported me when I started coaching the team.”

Baxter was the last coach to win the league title with the Kings in 2015.

McCarthy won the MTN8 title coaching Cape Town City in 2018, and finished second with MaZulu FC in the 2020/21 season.

He is currently cooking for the Kenyan national team, but he has publicly stated that he would accept the opportunity to coach the Chiefs if it came.
