A three-day celebration organized by a local DJ who has made a name for himself overseas, Nkosinathi Maphumulo popularly known as Black Coffee, was celebrating his birthday.

Black Coffee is happy to celebrate 50 years with its friends in Beau Constantia, Cape Town, and other places where the event was held.

At this event, he thanked his friends for coming when he invited them, and also discussed how he got the name Black Coffee.

Black Coffee said the name was brought to him by a woman he was in love with, something he has never revealed before.

“The first relationship I had, at that time, was when I fell in love with this woman for three years. She always called me “Black Coffee” whenever we talked. One day there was a place I went to when I was growing up in this industry, and it was said that there must be some papers to fill out and there was a space where you had to register the name you are known for in music because we were doing something that would grow us in this industry. I left the space but in the end I was called back by the name this woman called me, I wrote it because I thought she was calling me my mother if he’s happy with what I’ve done, no one has been with me,” said Black Coffee.

He said that since then, even though he was scared and it was unusual for people to call him that, he eventually got used to it, and decided that he should continue using this name.

“Today that woman, even if we don’t love each other anymore, she is here between us because she ended up being a friend to me,” she said.

In this event there were even celebrities from abroad including the rapper Swizz Beat who was accompanying his son.

Among the locals, there were Unathi Nkayi, Sizwe Dhlomo, Somizi Mhlongo, Oscar Mbo, DJ Fresh, DJ Maphorisa, Maglera Doe Boy, Cassper Nyovest, DJ Shimza, Oskido, Fikile Mbalula and others.

The show was hosted by comedian Mpho Popps.
