The Northern Cape police’s search and rescue unit’s search for the sixth body after a boat capsized on the Vaal River near Douglas this week resumed on Sunday.

The search was suspended on Saturday due to poor visibility.

Ao. Molefi Shemane, police spokesperson, says all available resources have been deployed in support of the police, in an attempt to recover the body of the person who is suspected to have drowned.

Maroela Media reported earlier that five bodies had already been recovered.

The bodies of two women, respectively 35 and 40 years old, and the body of a 55-year-old man were found on Friday.

The bodies of two more men, respectively 59 and 25 years old, were found on Thursday.

According to Shemane, the Douglas police received a call at around 06:30 on Thursday about a home-made boat that people are believed to be taking across the Vaal River.

Several people apparently ended up in the water. At the time, police said there were at least 20 people on the boat, 14 of whom survived. The survivors were treated in a hospital on Douglas and then discharged.

The search for another missing person has resumed and the investigation into the incident continues.
