Tributes are pouring in on social media after the death of David Theron, a young farmer from Bothaville.
Theron (25) died in a car accident on Saturday evening. He is thought to have fallen asleep behind the wheel, about 5 km from his farm Rooigom.
Sgt. Palesa Thabana, police spokesperson in the Free State, confirmed when asked that the police were called to the scene at around 00:10 on Sunday.
A white Toyota Hilux collided with a tree and caught fire. Theron was the only occupant.
“The police are investigating a case of culpable homicide. It is alleged that Theron was traveling alone when his vehicle left the road and collided with a tree. His pickup then caught fire while he was in the vehicle,” says Thabana.
Theron got engaged to Cléone Jansen van Rensburg earlier this month on his farm.
Jansen van Rensburg is a teacher at the Loskuil farm school in the Bothaville district.
The school expressed its deepest condolences to Jansen van Rensburg and Theron’s family.
“Loskuil expresses our deepest sympathy to Miss Cléone. Our hearts go out to them and their loved ones. No words can ease the pain you are currently experiencing, but know that you are in our thoughts and prayers,” reads the school’s post.

Another post reads: “What a great loss. I remember David as a gifted boy on the sports field and it was just a festival to have you in the class at Loskuil Farm School. I remember a specific sports day there on Loskuil’s field. David was agile and scored a three that we only saw stones and dust splash, just like that through the other boys’ legs. At prize-giving time he unpacked all his assessments in a row and added up each point carefully, thoroughly and precisely. Too precious for words, Elaine, may our heavenly Father comfort you in time.”
A consolation service is expected to be held on Thursday in the Meyerhof church in Bothaville.
