Three men were arrested in Brazil after the tragic bungee jumping incident in which a 21-year-old woman died on Saturday due to a serious error with rope equipment.
Local media identified the deceased as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas.
According to the police, the three men are charged with culpable homicide with dolus eventualis, which means that they were aware of the danger to life associated with their actions, but nevertheless continued with them.
A video of the incident, which has been widely distributed on social media, shows how two men lift De Freitas above their heads and drop her from the famous “Skeleton Bridge” in the interior of the state of São Paulo.
Onlookers apparently only realized too late that the safety equipment was not properly fastened and shouted in panic: “Guys, the rope!”
Maroela Media previously reported that the bridge has not been used for about three decades, but has since become a popular destination for adrenaline seekers, despite the fact that there is no official supervision or safety regulation.
“The safety equipment was not properly fastened at the time of the jump. The victim did not survive the fall,” the police confirmed in a statement.
“De Freitas fell about 40 m and was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Shortly before the incident, she shared another photo of the bridge on Instagram with the caption: “Who is the crazy person who makes me jump off a bridge?”
The police’s investigation into the exact circumstances and possible liability continues.
