THE family of a woman from Mkhazane, Lundi, who is said to have hacked the children’s father with a machete, stabbed him with a screwdriver in front of the children on Sunday.

According to a relative, Mr. Sambulo Mbona, the deceased, Ms. Nontando Mbona (31), died at the hospital in Nkonjeni.

He said that after the incident that happened at noon, the deceased was rushed to the local clinic as he was still breathing even though he had serious injuries on his face and head. He revealed that he was transferred to the hospital in the afternoon and that is where he died at night.

Narrating the incident, he said that the suspect called the deceased, and said that he would come and take the children’s money near the sports field where they used to see each other. He said the suspect and the deceased have four children, including six-year-old twins, four-year-old and two-year-old Magcino.

He said that when the incident happened, the deceased was traveling with one twin as well as another 13-year-old child in the family.

“He was armed with a machete and a screwdriver, and he took turns attacking him in front of the children. While he was doing this, the grown child ran to raise the alarm to the nearby neighbors, who came after the suspect had called for papers,” said Mbona.

He said that’s when the deceased was rushed to the clinic, and when the suspect was wanted, he was not found.

He stated that the suspect’s relationship with the deceased had been going on for a long time as they had four children. However, he said that he, as a man who rarely follows the news of his sisters who have been dating in the family, had never heard that there was a history of abuse by the father of the children of the deceased.

“I was just shocked when I heard that he had killed her in such a brutal way. However, I can see that he had the intention of killing her as he called her armed with a machete and a screwdriver. Even when he seriously injured her on the head and face, it paints a picture that she intended to kill him,” he said.

He urged the law enforcement to quickly arrest the suspect and punish them for the pain they have caused.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Sergeant Thenjiswa Ngcobo, said Lundi police are investigating a case of murder following an incident where a woman was killed by a man she knew.

“Reports indicate that the victim was injured by a man on Sunday in Mkhazane. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died the same day,” said Sergeant Ngcobo.
