Two suspects suspected to be part of the suspects who robbed a cash vehicle in Verulam on Monday, February, were shot dead during a shootout with the police in the area of Nhlazatshe, Shayamoya, Edendale in the early hours of Tuesday.
On Monday afternoon, at least 12 suspects robbed a cash machine at the corner of Jabu Ngcobo and Fairview roads in Verulam. The suspects stopped a truck carrying money and allegedly robbed the guards of three guns before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.
At midnight on Tuesday, the police gathered intelligence that some of the suspects involved in the Verulam incident were hiding in Edendale. The intelligence unit started working and when the police arrived at the house where the suspects were hiding, gunfire broke out between the police and the suspects.
Two suspects were shot dead while the third suspect narrowly escaped. The police found three guns, and several rounds of ammunition from the suspects. A VW Polo car suspected to have been used during the carjacking was also found at the scene. A van with multiple license plates was found in the garage.
No police officer was injured during the shootout and the search for the other suspects is ongoing.
