The Department of Treasury in KwaZulu-Natal is strengthening the operations of municipalities by closely monitoring the use of money so that the delivery of needs to the public is not disrupted due to the reckless use of money.
This Ministry is doing this by investing in its unit, Provincial Supply Chain Management.
The Minister of the Department, Mr. Francois Rodgers, announced that they have invested R6.5 million, to strengthen the operation of this department. He also invested R6 million in the office of the Provincial Accountant General, for his work in the Ministry of Education. This office oversees the department in spending money as it always has budget challenges.
“This money is part of R17 million, which we have saved in my office for the financial year 2025/2026. We want the municipalities to be careful that they use the money in the right way and follow the law.”
He said that R6.5 million will be used to tighten the bolts where there is a looseness in the management of money as the problem of careless handling of money is increasing.
“The 10 municipalities used money about R11 billion recklessly. It is unacceptable that the use of money recklessly increases because this interferes with the delivery of needs in the community,” he said.
He mentioned the Municipality of Thekwini and Sunduzi as receiving help in the management of money from the National Treasury.
“We will help other municipalities in managing contracts and following the rules set for money management. The municipalities that will benefit from this program are Mkhanyakude District, Mtubatuba Local, Thukela District, AbaQulusi Local, Mzinyathi District, Mpofana Local, Newcastle Local and Zululand District.”
He said that the plans to invest in the technology system for buying goods to reduce corruption in the department that buys goods in the government and municipalities Supply Chain are bearing fruit.
