Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, will hear on Wednesday whether the court will approve the request for his conviction and become a state witness.

Magistrate Ignatius du Preez is expected to deliver his decision at the Special Commercial Court, Pretoria.

On Thursday last week, Matlala pleaded guilty to seven charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering related to the R228m SA Police Service health tender awarded to his company, Medicare24 Tshwane District.

His case was separated from those he was accused of the day before, allowing him to appear alone in court.

“How do you confess to this crime?” Du Preez asked. “I plead guilty,” replied Matlala. He gave the same answer when he was accused of corruption and money laundering.

Under a section 105A plea and sentence deal, which was negotiated with the National Prosecuting Directorate Against Corruption over a period of two months, Matlala agreed to turn state witness in order to get a reduced sentence.

The state recommended that the court sentence him to 15 years in prison, with seven years suspended, leaving him to serve eight years from the start.
