A police sergeant shot and killed his wife before he shot himself and two children at their home in Parsonsvlei, Gqeberha.

The tragedy happened shortly after 12 midnight on Saturday, July 18.

According to the Eastern Cape Police (SAPS), initial investigations reveal that the two, who are active police officers, had an argument at their home before the sounds of gunshots were heard.

When the police arrived at the scene at about 00:05, they found their bodies, that of a 34-year-old female Sergeant who works at the Mount Road station and her 44-year-old husband, who is also a Sergeant who works at the New Brighton station.

Both suffered gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, confirmed that the gun believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered and taken as part of the investigation.

Although the investigators continue to research the exact details that led to their deaths, this incident left a very bad impact on the family, especially on the two young children of the deceased who were in the house when the incident happened.

“The SAPS staff health and welfare program has been launched to provide the necessary support and counseling to their colleagues and affected family members, including the two young children who were in the house when the incident occurred,” said Mawisa.
