POLICE revealed that officials of the Kurhuleni Municipality, Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi and Mr. Kagiso Lerutla, were arrested for hiring a person who impersonated Lerutla in court.

Lerutla, who is the manager of the council, is said to have hired someone to impersonate him in court where he was charged with reckless driving. The case eventually convicted Lerutla, and he was sentenced to do community service.

It is said that this person who was hired again pretended to be Lerutla, and went to do the public work that Lerutla was supposed to do. This was expressed by the national police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.

Brigadier Mathe said that the hired person was paid money which he shared with Mkhwanazi. Brigadier Mathe did not want to say whether the person employed by Lerutla would be arrested.

Mkhwanazi and Lerutla appeared briefly at the Magistrate’s Court in Boksburg, where they were facing charges of corruption and obstruction of justice.

Their case was postponed to Thursday. Mkhwanazi was found with ammunition when he was arrested. Mkhwanazi is accused of being close to a businessman facing a series of charges, Mr. Vusumuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

Meanwhile: The police officer suspected of being close to Matlala, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, continued to apply for bail, yesterday.

Nkosi has been arrested for obstructing the operation of the law and violating the rules for the storage of firearms. A decision on his bail application will be issued tomorrow.
Matlala also appeared briefly in court yesterday, where it was decided that he should be transferred from the prison in KwaZulu-Natal, Bongweni, to Kgosi Mampuru.
