Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia has urged the law enforcement officers to remain ‘behaved and neutral’ as South Africa prepares for protests planned across the country on June 30.

The protests, led by groups including the organization, March and March, demand stricter measures against undocumented foreigners. This promotion has raised concerns about possible violence against immigrants, as the government warns that any extortion of immigrants will not be tolerated.

Speaking at a preparation event in Durban on Sunday, Cachalia said the police will not prevent legal protests but will take measures to avoid violence and disturbances.

“Our role is to be neutral in any public debate. Our role is to uphold the Constitution, to apply the law without fear, bias or prejudice and to ensure that public peace is maintained.”

The minister said that the police have the responsibility to protect protesters and members of the public who will not participate in protests, saying that these are “constitutional responsibilities”.
