The Electoral Commission in this country has warned people who destroy its posters that they will be mourned by Sigonyela’s rings. The commission said that the posters are protected by law, so those who destroy them will target the alcoholics.
“There is a person who has been arrested for destroying the Commission’s posters. We want to warn people that self-destruction is a crime and those who do this will be arrested. Those who are thinking of doing this we say that they should look. Even if you are not happy about something, there is no need for you to destroy the property,” said the Commission’s official Mr. Sy Mamabolo in a press conference yesterday.
Mamabolo, who was talking about the registration process at the weekend, said that commission employees who do illegal things will be arrested.
“There is a case open against one of the workers, whose video appeared on social media holding a number of IDs and registering people but they are not there. This is not allowed and that is why the case has been opened against him,” said Mamabolo.
He also pointed out that the number of people on the ballot has increased to 28.5 million, from 27.7 million in the 2024 election. Mamabolo said the provinces that had many people who came out to register to vote included KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and others.
“We are pleased with the increase in the number of people participating in voting. We will open another opportunity for people to register to vote again. There are 477,174 new people who registered to vote for the first time. Some would check that they are still registered, others would change where they registered.”
Women are the most registered followed by men.
“Of the young people who registered over the weekend, 379,767 are young people aged 16 to 29. This is an indication that young people are participating in registering to vote.”
He announced that they will open this opportunity on the weekend of August 1st and 2nd this year. Local government elections are on November 4.
“We want people to participate in the voting process, that’s why we have programs like this. Those who haven’t registered still have the opportunity to do this by using the online system to register.”
He also revealed that a system has been opened for political parties and independent candidates to submit a list of people they will vote for in the election. Soon he said that they will train groups and private individuals to use this program so that they can make a list of the people they will use.
“What is left now is to speed up the program for the 30,000 who did not complete the registration at the weekend because the photos on their IDs were not clear. The team is busy with this task and if there is a need, we will contact them,” said Mamabolo.
