Durban City (0) 0

AmaZulu FC (0) 1

History has been made by three KwaZulu-Natal teams, finishing the season in the Top 8 for the first time after 29 seasons since the Premier Soccer League (PSL) was established.

AmaZulu FC ended the season on a high note, strengthening their fourth place in the Betway Premiership log by defeating Durban City in the Durban home game at Chatsworth Stadium, Durban, on Saturday.

Nkosikhona Radebe scored the winning goal for AmaZulu in the 82nd minute of the second half.

The Zulus entered the field needing three points to strengthen their fourth place on the log, while City needed a point in this game to ensure they finish in the Top 8.

In fact, City was fighting to be the third team from KwaZulu-Natal in the Top 8, as AmaZulu and Lamontville Golden Arrows had already reserved their place.

Arrows drew 0-0 with TS Galaxy at King Zwelithini Stadium, Mlaza, on Saturday.

Although Citizens failed to get a point in this home game against Suthu, they managed to secure a place in the Top 8 due to losing points to Stellenbosch FC and Siwelele FC, which were the teams that had the eighth place in the Top 8.

Stellenbosch drew 0-0 with Marumo Gallants, while Siwelele drew 2-2 with Sekhukhune United.

The Citizens finishing in the Top 8 means wrapping up their first season in the Premiership successfully since they recently became the champions of the Nedbank Cup, which gave them a unique opportunity to play in the Caf Confederation Cup next season.

This Durban team was playing its first season in the Premiership following its promotion to this division by winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship last year.

It is the first time since the 1996/97 season – the season in which the PSL was founded – that KZN has had three teams finish in the Top 8. This indicates that this province will be represented by three teams for the first time in the MTN8 competition next season.
