They often rescue dogs and cats, but on Thursday inspectors from the Animal Protection Society (SPBA) at Brakpan went to collect a giant bullfrog from a yard.

The SPCA says in a statement on their Facebook page that a local resident called them in a panic about the enormous bullfrog in her garden. “The resident was terrified and at first, amidst the chaos of a busy day at the shelter, it felt like just another item on an endless list of things that needed to be done.”

The team took a moment and thought a little. “We reminded ourselves that everyone deserves a chance at safety and we prepared for a very special rescue mission.”

The bullfrog, which has since been named Ferdie, was carefully removed from the yard. Back at the SPCA, he was thoroughly examined.

With Ferdie safe, there was even time for a quick joke at the SPCA. “Mariska Venter, an inspector, even gave Ferdie a kiss to see if he would turn into a prince. He is still a frog, but a very happy, healthy and safe one.”

Ferdie will be released in a suitable wetland area.
