Six people were killed and four seriously injured on Friday morning in a head-on collision between two vans on the R542 between Van Dyk’s Drift and Blinkpan near Middelburg in Mpumalanga.

According to preliminary information from the scene, a Volkswagen Amarok from Delta 1 Search and Rescue and a Mahindra bakkie were involved in the accident around 10:30.

The Amarok reportedly had one occupant, while there were several people in the Mahindra. Some of the passengers rode in the back of the van.

The Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison in Mpumalanga confirmed that all six persons, the two drivers of the vehicles and four passengers, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other people were seriously injured and taken to hospitals in Middelburg and Emalahleni for treatment.

Emergency services, including paramedics, firefighters, the police, Delta 1 Search and Rescue and towing services, were on the scene.

The cause of the accident is not yet known and an investigation is already underway.

Jackie Macie, provincial MEC for community safety, warned motorists to be careful and remain alert at all times.

“All road users must do their part to help prevent such a loss of life. Every road user must obey the rules of the road and remain vigilant at all times.”

He expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
