A police officer attached to the Germiston police station was arrested by the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (Opod) after he allegedly raped a woman at the police station earlier this week.
Phaladi Shuping, spokesperson for Opod, says it is alleged that the police officer went to the detention cell of the complainant and raped her.
“The complainant was allegedly arrested for a case of domestic violence, and she was alone in the cell. The complainant was apparently called to the reception desk at 18:00 and informed that her file had disappeared without a trace and was escorted back to the cell.”
Shuping says the police officer allegedly went to the cell of the complainant between 21:00 and 22:00 and allegedly raped her.
“The complainant allegedly did not report the incident to the other police officers because she thought they would protect him. She only mentioned the incident to her sister during her visit,” says Shuping.
The incident was later reported to Opod, and the investigation led to the arrest of the police officer after the complainant identified him as the alleged perpetrator.
The police officer is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
