SUKUNYLEWA is a fund that supports students with tuition fees in institutions of higher education, theNational Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), gambling problem that has hit these institutions.
This fund, in partnership with the National Gambling Board (NGB), will go on a campaign to visit institutions, warning students about the dangers of gambling.
NSFAS Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Waseem Carrim, said that they took action against this problem after being concerned about the problem of online gambling.
Carrim said that some students who have been injected with this practice, use the money given to them by the government to gamble.
“Research shows that the increase in gambling advertisements and the pressure faced by students to seek money, makes the youth fall into the gambling trap. We are committed to supporting students in education and gambling can make those who fall into this habit, end up not doing well in their studies, and ruining their future. We will make students aware to think carefully before entering this trap,” he said.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of NGB, Mr. Lungile Dukwana, said that with this campaign they aim to protect young people from entering with knowledge of the dangers of gambling.
“We will focus on raising awareness about gambling using online as well as the gambling advertisements that have increased on social media. We are adamant that gambling must comply with the laws of the country and children and people who are easily addicted must be protected.”
These agencies will soon sign a partnership agreement to encourage students not to use NSFAS funds for gambling. Plans will also be created to prevent university and college students from becoming addicted to gambling.
It is not the first time that there has been concern about the problem of gambling in this country, especially the one that has affected the youth. Complaints were made about the problem of too much advertising, as a reason for people to be attracted to gambling.’
Last year Parliament discussed the issue of gambling and the impact it has on the people of this country. Reports show that in this country from 2023 to 2024, the people of this country spent millions gambling. The leading gambling is sports betting, and young men are said to be the strongest in gambling.
