Something else has come to light regarding the sour relationship between the president of KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA), who has been moved, Steve Mkasi, and the Amaravens Athletics Club, which eventually led to the incident of the official shaking hands with the club’s runner.

Mkasi has been removed from the post of overseeing KZNA so that his disciplinary process can continue following the spread of a video on social media showing him fighting with Amaravens Athletics Club runner, Sphephelo Ndlovu, who is also the organizer and marketing director of the Best of the Best Marathon.

The KZNA board decided to remove Mkasi from his position, and his deputy Khulezweni “Khura” Buthelezi was arrested.

Stopped noNdlovu that he should not get involved in any race until the disciplinary process with Maksi is completed.

According to a statement issued by Amaravens Athletics Club, it appears that Mkasi first threatened Ndlovu that he would shoot him with a 14-year-old child who filmed part of the video when Ndlovu and Makasi got into a fight in Morningside, Durban, last week.

The club revealed in this statement that Ndlovu filed a case at the Berea police station, after the incident.

It also revealed that Mkasi and the runners’ club have been in conflict since the disagreement that started in 2023, when the dates of the Capital City Marathon and the Best of the Best Marathon coincided, which resulted in these races being run on the same day that year.

Mkasi who is the organizer of the Capital City Marathon of 42.2km appears to have voiced several times his opposition to the date set for the Best of the Best Marathon of 42.2km scheduled to be run on February 28, 2027, because he says this is the day of his race, Capital City.

Contacted by Solezwe, Makasi denied the allegations against him.

“It is not true that I threatened to shoot Ndlovu. Even in the video itself, he is the one who can be heard saying to me, ‘I will kill you’. I must clarify that my argument with Ndlovu had nothing to do with the Best of the Best Marathon but it was about cyber bullying (bad writing about another person on social media). “It has been a long time since 2019 that bad things have been written about me on social media, I have been silent and not defending myself,” said Mkasi.

“Khuzwayo (Amaravens chairman) is not revealing the truth about why his race is not on the calendar. The truth is that he has not paid his dues in his 2026 race, and he has been evading payment for many years.”
