Pres. On Friday, Cyril Ramaphosa received the second interim report of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.
Vincent Magwenya, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, says the president will study the report while the commission continues its proceedings.
“President Ramaphosa expressed his appreciation for the interim report, as well as his expectation that the commission will refer actions, which are considered criminal acts, for prosecution as part of its mandate,” says Magwenya.
Maroela Media previously reported that Ramaphosa received the first interim report in December last year.
He launched the Madlanga commission of inquiry into criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system in July last year, after Lt. Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, provincial police commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, raised damning allegations of political interference at a media conference.
Several stakeholders have since testified before the commission, including Marius (Vlam) van der Merwe – better known as “Witness D” in the Madlanga commission of inquiry. Van der Merwe, a former Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Officer (EMPD) and respected community leader, was murdered shortly after his testimony before the Madlanga Commission where he exposed corruption and crime links.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who was placed on special leave after Mkhwanazi raised the allegations, has since also appeared before the commission.
Mchunu defended his controversial decision to disband the police task force for political killings before the commission.
