SOUTH Africa had its moment in the limelight before Bafana Bafana kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Mexico at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City. Grammy Award-winning local singer Tyla collaborated with the Mzansi Youth Choir in singing the South African national anthem at the opening of the competition.

Tyla is not the only one who was seen in this place as there are other celebrities from this country who showed through pictures and videos that they are also present in this country in North America to fly the flag of this country.

Thando Thabethe is among the South Africans who came to Mexico City to support Bafana Bafana in the World Cup.

The actor who is also a broadcaster posted a video on TikTok on Thursday, June 11, with Joy “Mama Joy” Chauke interested in being part of the thousands of people who were at the opening ceremony of the games.

Another celebrity in Mexico right now is singer, Busiswa Gqulu. This lady who is also a music producer is part of the cultural team sent to support the national team in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture and the Old School company.

From the streets of Pachuca, where Bafana Bafana started their training camp, to Mexico City, Busiswa has been posting on social media what is happening there while raising the South African flag.

Speaking to Independent Media Lifestyle, the singer said that his role goes beyond singing. “We are giving a strong boost to Bafana Bafana, the vibe and dance that unites people all over the world, especially in South Africa,” he said. Busiswa added that one of the most exciting things about this trip is seeing how music and sports are connected in both countries.
