The House of Indigenous Leadership in KwaZulu-Natal and the DA leadership in the province condemned violence in the protests against illegal immigrants that will take place today.
Chiefs and DA leaders urged the protesters to obey the law.
A number of protests are expected in KwaZulu-Natal today as the deadline set for illegal immigrants to leave has passed.
The deputy chairman of the house of indigenous leadership in KwaZulu-Natal, King Zwelinzima Gumede, said that they wish the protests planned for today to be peaceful.
She said this while speaking to the media, yesterday, in Durban.
“We don’t want the same situation in 2021 to return. I think there are sisters and brothers who are still staying at home because of it. The leaders of the protests may have good intentions but there are opportunists. That’s why we urge people to follow the law.”
The king urged the people of this country not to quarrel with each other over the issue of immigrants and over the shops and houses that will be left behind by the immigrants.
The king said they also agree with the call for those in the country illegally to leave.
“Those who don’t have papers have said to let us go a little bit, to fix their paperwork issue. It can be seen again when they fix their issue.”
DA leader in KwaZulu-Natal, Mr. Sithembiso Ngema, said they want the police to ensure that the rules are followed. He said this while speaking to the media, yesterday, in Durban.
“There are laws followed by the country. Everything that will happen must be followed by the laws. I am asking all the people of KwaZulu-Natal to calm down. I am asking all the people to respect each other. I am urging all the police and all the security agencies to protect all the people. I am counting the businessmen, schools, places of worship and everyone there.”
Ngema urged the government to respond to people’s complaints, not to wait for protests.
Ngema said that the people of this country have been complaining about the leakage of borders.
