Advocate Andrea Johnson has resigned from her position as the head of the Department of Investigation of Corruption (IDAC), saying that the ongoing attacks and controversy surrounding her leadership has become a danger to the reputation of the department and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

In a resignation letter addressed to the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andy Mothibi and president Cyril Ramaphosa, Johnson asked for immediate release from office, requesting that the contract law that requires three months’ notice before leaving the job be followed.

“This is a difficult request to make given the passion and dedication I have for the position of Director of Investigations for IDAC,” he wrote.

Johnson said the past five months had been very difficult and that the attacks on him personally and his position were unprecedented. He said that the major criticism was due to the cases that IDAC was investigating officers of the Department of Criminal Intelligence (Crime Intelligence) under the South African Police Service (SAPS). “This attack, by all means, has brought a lot of negative attention, not only to me, but also to IDAC and the NPA,” he wrote.
