The DA has filed corruption charges against the former Kurhuleni City Manager, Dr. Imogen Mashazi, following reports that a businessman arranged a private jet trip for him to London for R3.5 million.
Reports say that Mashazi did not disclose this trip to the council.
DA members gathered outside the police station, in Germiston, where the DA’s representative in Kurhuleni, Khathutshelo Rasilingwane filed a corruption case against Dr Mashazi.
In a statement, the DA said it opened a case against Mashazi and the company, XET Solutions, following reports linking them to tender irregularities in the municipality.
“In July 2022, Mashazi accepted a chartered flight to London worth millions of rands. He did not report the trip. From the allegations contained in this weekend’s papers – now it is clear why: the money for the flight came from a company called XET Solutions, which at that time had an active tender with the council.”
The DA says this is part of the billions of public funds that have been stolen when the level of service delivery to the people has declined.
“What we see is very suspicious that the company involved in this matter, XET Solutions, received tenders to work with important infrastructure related to the payment of electricity bills and therefore it is affected by the payment system of the municipality. In particular, tender number A-ICT 02-2021, which was issued when Mzwandile Masina was Mayor, gave XET Solutions the task of repairing, developing and expanding the infrastructure.
“This program is known as SOLAR, and it was the same one that was exploited by the gang that benefited R2 billion from the City. Soon after Mashazi’s trip to London – XET Solutions was awarded another tender, A-ICT 04-2023 to continue working on SOLAR,” the DA said in a statement.
