Several incoming international flights were temporarily diverted and other flights delayed at the Cape Town International Airport on Tuesday morning, after a fire broke out on the landing side of the airport.

The Cape Town International Airport’s spokesperson says in a statement that the fire was “successfully extinguished” and “all passengers, staff and visitors are safe. Passengers’ safety remains (its) highest priority.”

However, the incident caused major disruption, with thick smoke spreading into the local customs and domestic terminal. Passengers also waited a long time on planes before they could enter the airport.

The incident also affected certain network and IT services.

“As a precautionary measure, outbound international flights have been temporarily suspended and inbound international flights are being diverted,” the statement said.

International flights that have already landed are being assisted in the meantime.

Passengers traveling domestically are advised to check with their airlines and via the Acsa mobile app for the latest flight information.

Maroela Media reported earlier that a fire was apparently caused by an electrical fault.
