The police in the Eastern Cape have requested the public’s help in the search for one of its patrol dogs who is missing after responding to an armed robbery.

Three armed men robbed Nzuzo Primary School in Mdantsane of 20 laptops and 15 mobile phones on Friday morning before fleeing in the principal’s black Peugeot.

According to Brig. Police spokesman Nobuntu Gantana said the air unit responded quickly and the principal’s vehicle was found about 1 km from the school.

“The suspects were seen running into bushes next to a nearby dam. The dog unit was called, and a sergeant and his patrol dog, Floppy, trapped the suspects in the dense bushes.

“When the suspects ran further into dense vegetation, the handler released the dog to stop them. Soon after, the handler heard a suspect yelling from the woods, followed by the sound of gunshots.”

Additional police officers arrived to assist. However, according to Gantana, Floppy could not be located, and the three suspects managed to flee. They are still at large.

“Air and ground searches were carried out by SAPS members, supported by members of the public who volunteered extra support in terms of drones. Despite extensive efforts, the search was called off at 5.30pm due to poor visibility.” The search will continue today.

“We are deeply concerned about the safety of Floppy who bravely performed his duty,” said Lt. Gen. Vuyisile Ncata, the police commissioner in the Eastern Cape. “We appeal to anyone who saw Floppy, or who has any information about the whereabouts of the suspects, to come forward immediately.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact 08600 10111 or the nearest police station.
