It has been postponed to Friday, so that the man accused of shooting and killing a police officer of the Presidential Protection Unit in Newtown A, Nanda, in April last year, can apply for bail.

The deceased, Sergeant Sanele Dlamini (37), a resident of the area, was shot and killed by unknown suspects in April 2025.

According to Klebe KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, the latter’s suspect, Mr Kwanele Khatheni (27) was arrested on Wednesday and appeared at the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

On the day of the incident, it is said that Dlamini, who was not at work, was driving his car on Mafukuzela road in Newtown A, stopped near the garage and went to the shop on the other side.

“While he was waiting to buy, he was attacked by the suspects. He was able to take out his service gun, he shot repeatedly at the suspects, one of them also shot Dlamini, and succeeded in taking away his service gun,” said Mhlongo.

He said he was taken to the hospital in his car, but he was found dead when he arrived.

He said a murder case was opened at the Nanda police station, and the Hawk team was the one that went to the scene of the incident.

“There was information that one of the suspects was taken to the local clinic, the police handed him over there, and when they arrived they put him under the supervision of the police, it turned out that he is Mr. Ntuthuko Nzama (27),” said Mhlongo.

He revealed that he appeared at the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court after a few days, and that is where he continues to appear as he is still in custody.

He said the police investigation went on and on and revealed that Nzama was taken to the clinic by Khatheni, who is said to have come and called himself Sipho, which led to him not being arrested early as they finally called for him on Wednesday.

He stated that while Khatheni is expected to apply for bail on Friday, Nzama will appear in the same court on Wednesday as his trial will continue.
