Dr. Marianne Simmelink, Gauteng’s chief state veterinarian for biosecurity, believes farmers should instead focus on prioritizing and applying their biosecurity measures, before vaccinations for foot-and-mouth disease are administered.

Simmelink says it is worrying that farmers believe that they do follow these measures on their farms, “but just putting a high-pressure sprayer in front of their farm’s entrance is only a small part of the bigger problem and is not necessarily going to offer any solutions”.

She emphasizes that biosecurity in South Africa can improve significantly and also points out that it is a “joint process” that includes farmers, workers on farms and everyone who transports animals.

Simmelink also explained how compartments work in pig farming and strongly emphasized their importance.
