The Northern Cape police’s search and rescue unit recovered three more bodies after a boat capsized on the Vaal River near Douglas on Thursday. A fourth person is still being sought.

This brings the death toll to five.

Ao Molefi Shemane, police spokesperson in the Northern Cape, says the bodies of two women, respectively 35 and 40 years old, and the body of a 55-year-old man were found on Friday.

The bodies of two more men, respectively 59 and 25 years old, were found on Thursday.

According to Shemane, the Douglas police received a call at around 06:30 on Thursday about a home-made boat that people are believed to be taking across the Vaal River.

Several people apparently ended up in the water. The police said at that stage that there were apparently at least 20 people on the boat, of which 14 survived. The survivors were treated in a hospital on Douglas and then discharged.

The team resumed their search for another missing person on Saturday morning and the investigation into the incident continues.
