AS it has become popular in the community for registering to vote in the local government elections that will be held on November 4, this year, the Electoral Commission has encouraged the youth to use the opportunity to register to vote.

The commission said this just yesterday when a television show, which promotes voting on SABC1, started airing, iBeats for My Peeps. It aired at 6 pm and has 10 episodes.

The chief executive officer of the commission, Mr. Sy Mamabolo, said that the game speaks a language familiar to young people. Mamabolo said that this game, which uses music as well as dialogue, aims to encourage people, especially young people, to get involved in election-related matters.

“We are equipping the youth with information about voting and elections. We want the youth to take part in the elections without being complacent.”

Mamabolo said the youth are the future leaders so it is important for them to be part of what is happening in this country.

Ms Moagisi Letlhaku, who is responsible for teaching voting in the commission, said they are happy with this program because it will teach.

“It will not only entertain the youth but it will also teach about voting and elections. We are concerned about the motivation of young people in matters related to elections. The program will help us by teaching especially since the days are counting down to the weekend to register to vote in this country.”

On June 20 and 21, the commission will open all polling stations in the country for people to register to vote. This weekend some will be able to check if they are still registered where they live. Others will also be able to check if the addresses are on the ballot paper.

People are encouraged to register where they are going to vote because in this election you only vote where you are registered. Those who are not registered can also register using the online system at: registertovote.elections.org.za.
