The police have arrested another suspected drug mule at the OR Tambo International Airport after more than 40 kg of khat was discovered in his luggage.

Lt. Col. Amanda van Wyk, police spokesperson, says the arrest follows an intelligence-driven operation that was carried out at the airport earlier this week.

“The suspect, a Dutch citizen, was allegedly on his way to Frankfurt in Germany when he was caught by the police at the airport.”

According to Van Wyk, during the operation, police officers seized more than 40 kg of khat, which was hidden in the man’s luggage.

“The drugs have an estimated street value of R240 000. The suspect is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges related to drug trafficking.”

Van Wyk says the police will continue to intensify its efforts against transnational organized crime and drug trafficking.

“OR Tambo continues to be an important focal point for the police due to the large number of international travelers who pass through the airport on a daily basis.

“In the past two years, the police have arrested more than 50 drug mules at this airport.

“These arrests show the effectiveness of the intelligence-driven operations and the constant vigilance of law enforcement officers at South Africa’s ports of entry.”

Van Wyk says the police will continue to use all available resources to disrupt international drug trafficking networks and bring suspects to book.
