Durban MUNICIPALITY has accepted the recommendations of the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which it passed on to them for the successful hosting of major annual events – which has helped to bring in huge profits for the city.

The Durban Chamber commended the leadership of Thekwini, led by Mayor Councilor Cyril Xaba, who successfully hosted the Hollywoodbets Durban July horse race and fashion and entertainment competition and the Comrades Marathon.

The President of the Durban Chamber, Mr. Asheen Magjee, commended the leadership of Durban to work hard enough and appropriately to help make these events a success.

“These events have shown that Durban has the power to entertain people at a high level, so we thank the city’s leadership for ensuring that everything goes in the right direction and for properly hosting all the visitors, authorities and all the people who were part of these two events,” said Magjee.

This year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July had about 45 000 visitors who spent about R254 million, which helped generate about R880 million in the city’s economy, and helped create 1 270 jobs.

The Comrades Marathon had 21,600 participants and 65,000 spectators, while the GAS Motor Show attracted 30,000 visitors over two days.

Xaba said that their praise in this way indicates that their hard work is putting Durban on the map, which they hope they will continue to build on so that the city’s economy can develop strongly.

“All this happening now points to the importance of cooperation to promote and develop the economy of Thekwini, which also helps to increase the opportunities for Thekwini to be known as a place for tourism and major events,” he said.
