A US motorist’s plan to drive in the fast lane failed miserably when traffic authorities realized there was something seriously wrong with his expressionless passenger.

The motorist was stopped in the American state of California with his passenger who was a doll all along. There are lanes on American highways that can only be used by motorists with passengers, precisely in an effort to reduce traffic load on roads by encouraging carpooling opportunities.

In terms of legislation, this means there must be at least two people in a car.

Traffic authorities from Hayward, near San Francisco, therefore became suspicious of the “passenger” with a blue hooded top and sun hat, but without facial features.

“Just a reminder to the public that occupants should be real people, not your arts and crafts project,” the California Highway Patrol posted on their Facebook page Tuesday.

Drivers who break the rules can be fined $490 (about R8 000) according to Caltrans, the institution that manages the state’s highways.
