How AI Use In India: The use of AI is increasing rapidly in India, but it is limited to some top cities. According to a new study by OpenAI, ChatGPT is most used in Delhi-NCR. Talking about the top 10 cities using AI, people of Assam use ChatGPT the most for studies.
More than 10 crore active users
According to the report, India is one of the most advanced AI markets in the world. Especially in matters of coding, data analysis and complex logic. The adoption of OpenAI tools is three times higher in the top cities of India compared to other countries like the US, UK, Brazil and Germany. According to the report, ChatGPT has more than 100 million active users every week in India, making it one of the company’s biggest markets. OpenAI’s findings also show that despite claims that AI is an ‘equalizer’, adoption of the technology is not uniform across geographies. Meaning it is being used for different purposes in different areas.
Similar use of Claude
This disparity in AI adoption across regions is not limited to ChatGPT. A report by Anthropic earlier this year found that Claude is used more in high-income countries and within the US, where there are more ‘knowledge workers’. Also, it is used more for certain types of work and professions only. The question now is how quickly the benefits of AI can reach the common people beyond early adopters and big cities.
Limited to specific users and areas
Last year, big AI companies like Google, OpenAI and Perplexity competed to provide long-term free access to premium AI services to millions of users in India. Despite these efforts, OpenAI reports, AI adoption is still limited to certain users and regions. To overcome the lack of capacity in AI use in India, OpenAI said it will depend on factors such as language, affordability and infrastructure.
Use in these cities for coding
OpenAI’s AI coding assistant Codex was launched in India in February 2026. Within two weeks of its launch, its usage increased 4 times. OpenAI said that there is a 9-fold difference in the use of Codex in different areas of India. Use of the coding tool is limited to a few cities, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi and Chennai.
Where and for what purpose is the work coming?
According to the report, India’s eastern states like Assam, Odisha, Manipur, Tripura and Chhattisgarh use ChatGPT more for education and learning than other parts of the country. The report said that 22 percent of all messages sent to ChatGPT in Assam are related to education and learning.
People of these states ask questions on health
In areas like Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala, ChatGPT receives the most queries related to health and wellness. Nearly 1 out of every 10 messages sent to ChatGPT by users in Jammu and Kashmir is health related.
