Death toll from Venezuela earthquakes rises to 5,208

The death toll from the two earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month has risen to 5,208, according to updated official figures released on Sunday.

The death toll has increased by 89 since Saturday. It is now 25 days since the disaster on June 24, when two powerful earthquakes occurred shortly after each other. La Guaira, a coastal state near the capital Caracas, was the worst hit.

The number of injured remains unchanged at 16,740, according to Jorge Rodriguez, president of Venezuela’s legislature.

Rescue workers in La Guaira continue to retrieve bodies from the rubble of dozens of collapsed buildings.

Venezuelan authorities have not yet given an estimate of how many people are still missing. The UN previously estimated that as many as 50,000 people could still be missing.

Almost 20,000 homeless people in La Guaira are housed in temporary camps set up in stadiums, in public squares and on sidewalks.

According to official figures, more than 850 buildings were damaged, while 190 completely collapsed.
