The chairman of Cape Town City, John Comitis, has not thrown in the towel on the chance to return to the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

City finished second in the Motsepe Foundation Championship log last season but failed to finish in the historic PSL Promotional Play-Offs where they were defeated by Milford FC.

Comitis told this newspaper that although they have not yet hired a new coach, their plans are focused on returning to the Motsepe Championship. He said he will not pass up the opportunity of the Premiership if it presents itself.

City let go of coach Jan Vreman from the Netherlands who helped them finish the season against teams that scored fewer goals.

Not only this coach has lost his job at Citizens, but Njabulo Ngcobo of Kaizer Chiefs fame, Miguel Timm who won titles with Orlando Pirates and Sifiso Ngubeni who was on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, have been let go.

“The City is busy with preparations to continue life in the major supply sector, although we will not give up the opportunity to return to where there is honey if it presents itself,” said Comitis.

“We have a lot to worry about since the team failed to return to the Betway Premiership, so there are decisions that we need to make quickly.

“I understand that I have to accept the situation because we got the second chance (in the qualifiers with Magesi FC and Milford) but we lost. It is painful to be left in the big feeder division when you finished the season lying second on the log.

“Many of the decisions we take as the season starts are because we are trying to correct the mistakes we made in the past.

“There is no doubt that we have the experience to form a team that can win the title in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, but if the right opportunity presents itself to return to the big league in other ways, we will not give it up.”
