The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court decided the case against Lt. Gen. Dumisani Khumalo, head of the police’s crime intelligence division, and six co-accused have been adjourned until September 3 for the outcome of representations to the office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).

The defendants face charges of fraud and corruption related to the appointment of an incompetent civilian employee to a senior position within the police’s crime intelligence division.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) investigative directorate against corruption (Idac), the investigation has been completed and the state is ready to hear the case in a trial court.

Maroela Media earlier reported that in June last year Khumalo appeared together with six other defendants in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on four charges of corruption and four of fraud.

The die is sluit in genl.majs. Philani Lushaba, Nosipho Precious Madondo, Josias Lekalaka, Zwelithini Gabela, Brig. Phindile Ncube and Brig. Dineo Mokwele – The Best Of Dineo Mokwele.

The charges stem from the alleged irregular appointment of Mokwele as head of crime intelligence’s technical support services, a specialized unit that operates in secret. She was apparently appointed at brigadier level without any qualifications in policing.

Khumalo, Madondo, Lekalaka, Gabela, Ncube and Mokwele were earlier released on bail of R10 000 each. According to Henry Mamothame, spokesman for Idac, they may not enter any crime intelligence premises.

Lushaba meanwhile remains in custody after he was arrested earlier. He was the chief financial officer of crime intelligence at the time of his arrest.

The accused are also accused of disregarding the police’s selection process for senior appointments. According to Mamothame, this process is of crucial importance, especially in crime intelligence where sensitive and confidential information is handled.
