One of the players who made a name for himself in Bobokhoko and Hollywoodbets Sharks, Lukhanyo Am, has NOT given up on fighting for his place in the national team.

Am (32), who won the World Cup with the Springboks in Japan in 2019, was also called up to replace Makazole Mapimpi who was injured in the middle of the tournament when the team defended the title in France in 2023.

In those years he was considered one of the best players in the world in his midfield position.

However, several injuries over the years have led to him not joining the national team for which he will play for the last time in 2024.

After spending years with the Sharks, Am moved to Japan in November last year to join the Mitsubishi Dynaboars.

Speaking about the impact of the injury, Am said that the most important thing is how determined he is now that he has recovered.

Being included in the list of players based abroad that the Springboks coaches discussed with them about modern technology last month also reassured him about his chances of returning to the national team.

“This game we play is difficult. It happens that you get injured and some players recover faster than others. I have experienced a lot but it is still difficult when I am injured. Although it is nice to see your teammates doing well, you also want to be on the field,” said Am in a press conference.

“I was happy to be part of the players in the programs of the Bobokhoko coaches this year. It encouraged me to know that they are still watching me and they see what I am doing in Japan.

“I need determination to be at the level required by the Springboks. That is what I can control. I have to take care of my body and play well. If you are at the right level, you get a chance in the national team.

“I still have the passion and I still love to compete and play rugby at the highest level.”

The Springboks will open the 2026 season by facing the Barbarians at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Gqeberha, on June 20. It is expected that coach Rassie Erasmus will announce the squad that will go to the second camp soon.
