It is said that North West businessman Suliman Carrim was seen shopping at Woolworths, in the Western Cape, which made the leader of the evidence Adv. Matthew Chaskalson asked that the investigation subpoena his doctors and obtain his medical records. This intense request appeared on Wednesday at the Madlanga Commission after the postponement of the testimony of Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Chaskalson told the commissioners that he received a report from two people that they saw Carrim at the mall, where they allegedly saw him eating lunch.
Chaskalson said the commission is now waiting for CCTV footage from the mall or Woolworths to confirm the allegations. These allegations came as Carrim again failed to testify before the commission, complaining of poor health.
Chaskalson countered that although the medical note sent on Carrim’s behalf explained his absence, it did not say he would not be able to answer the commission’s questions.
He reminded the commissions that Carrim also failed to appear after receiving the notice on June 17 and that the commission is still waiting for an affidavit answering its questions. Chaskalson also pointed out that the witness has not sent the financial statements related to the companies of Carrim, Ziggy, Tasmika and Tamiez, which are still working and receiving money from various government departments, adding that these businesses have received millions of rands.
