Yesterday there were reports that the police have arrested more than 100 people who broke the law as there were protests against illegals in the country.

Protests organized by the March and March organization were held in different cities yesterday.

Although it was peaceful in other areas, riots were reported in Johannesburg and Pietermaritzburg.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: “Five people were arrested for breaking into tuck shops run by foreigners. They were stealing different things. Three suspects were caught by private security guards who caught them taking goods from the store. The suspects were handed over to the police and charged. Two other suspects were arrested in Madiba slums, Mountain Rise, Mgungundlovu. The fifth suspect was arrested in Thubalethu township, Melmoth. for robbery. It is said that he raided a house and threatened foreigners with a stick and stole their goods.”

He went on to say that a woman was arrested and charged with assaulting the police and threatening, while another man was also arrested for threatening. Police were investigating reports of a foreigner who was said to have been assaulted by a group of people in Burnwood, Sydenham.

It is said that people were violent in Sydenham slums attacking immigrants.

“When the police intervened, the woman beat them. The arrested suspects will appear in court soon,” said Netshiunda.

Five others were arrested in relation to the incidents involving the burglary of businesses in Woody Glen, Hammarsdale early yesterday morning.

The police responded quickly when they were told about a group of people who were breaking into tuck shops in Unit 4, Hammarsadale township.

One suspect was arrested inside the tuck shop and four were beaten while trying to escape. The suspects, between the ages of 14 and 27, were charged with vandalizing property and breaking into businesses. They will appear in court soon.

Others who were accused of wearing Sigonyela’s bracelets turned out to be breaking the law in Johannesburg.
