A 48-year-old man from Ntabazwe, near Harrismith, was arrested following allegations of killing his girlfriend, Lerato Mofokeng, 43, also from Ntabazwe.

It is suspected that on Sunday, 31 May 2026, around 19:00, the deceased had an argument with her boyfriend after he saw her walking with another woman.

During the argument, the suspect allegedly hit the girlfriend on the head with beer bottles. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. On Monday, 1 June 2026, he was transferred to QwaQwa hospital for further treatment.

Unfortunately, it was enough to die on Tuesday. The police were then called to the hospital, as the case of assault with intent to injure turned into murder. The police followed the trail and arrested the suspect who was charged with murder.

He is expected to appear at Harrismith Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
