The trial of the two suspects arrested by the IPID on 4 and 5 July 2026, for their unlawful conduct in the alleged illegal possession and seizure of jewels worth less than R15 million in Killarney, Johannesburg, has been adjourned to 16 July 2026 for a formal bail application to be made at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
When the investigation started, there were six suspects. Three were from the EMPD, one from the JMPD, one from the Gauteng Traffic Police and a businessman who allegedly posed as a police officer during the attack. The sixth suspect is missing.
The two, EMPD Constable Adriaan Norman Mackenzie and businessman Etienne van der Walt are among five suspects facing fraud charges for their conduct and the theft of the jewels. The EMPD officers conducted an investigation in a city that is not under their municipality in conjunction with a JMPD officer under the VIP protection unit who also broke the law.
