Three suspects, respectively 38, 48 and 16 years old, were arrested by the police in North-West on Saturday for public violence during the first registration weekend.

Col. Adéle Myburgh, police spokesperson, says the suspects apparently tried to prevent a voter registration center from opening in the Klipgat informal settlement near Klerkskraal.

In a separate incident, a 35-year-old man was arrested in Wolmaransstad after allegedly threatening an official of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The suspect apparently demanded that the IEC official lock the venue and leave the premises.

Myburgh says the suspect is facing charges of intimidation in terms of the Electoral Act.

All four suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

Police say that while rain affected turnout at some polling stations, no crime-related incidents were reported on Sunday.

Maroela Media earlier reported that the DA’s candidate in the by-election in ward 104 in Dunoon in the Western Cape and an ANC councilor for ward 27 in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality in Gqeberha were shot dead in two separate cases on Saturday.

Sinovuyo Dyokwe, the DA’s candidate in the by-election in Dunoon was shot dead on Saturday on her return home from the registration room during the voter registration weekend.

Sicelo Mleve (45), an ANC councilor for ward 27 in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, was shot at his office on Saturday evening when two men opened fire on him. He was also an ANC member for the municipality’s executive regional committee.

No one has yet been arrested in connection with these two incidents.
