KEEPING it hot since he arrived at the job he started 16 years ago strengthened the skull of Mrs. Siphesihle Godlwana, and helped him to find many job opportunities at the King Shaka International Airport.
Mrs Godlwana from Newlands East, Durban, is now a Bird and Wildlife Officer at this airport which she started working at when it was opened on May 1 2010, which was part of the preparations for the World Cup held in this country.
Narrating the work she is doing now, Mrs. Godlwana said that she is responsible for the safety of the environment and making sure that the movement of airplanes is not disturbed, and that their movement, going up and down the airport, does not disturb the environment and animals.
“Everything I’m accomplishing now with my life is a proof of how much honesty where you work can help you achieve your dreams, just as everything I have and have achieved in my life happened to me,” he said.
He went on to say that before the job he is doing now – he started working as a passenger service, where he was responsible for helping their customers with whatever they needed, and making sure that they got everything they needed in the right way.
“From there I became aviation security, where he was looking after me and taking great care of the safety of customers or passengers when they arrive or leave the airport, as I have grown up to what I am now,” he said.
He said that the work he is doing now is often a challenge as he is constantly going up and down, making sure that the environment and animals at the airport are not disturbed.
“Even though I do a job that is dominated by men, it is possible to get a little carried away with other things. That challenges you to be strong and do more than you should to show that your gender does not interfere at all in the work you are hired for,” said Mrs. Godlwana.
Regarding future plans, he said he wishes to continue to grow in his career, and equip himself with higher education knowledge as he currently has a Diploma in International Travel and Tourism from IEE Varsity College, and then a Degree in Environmental Management which he is currently doing at the University of South Africa.
